Playing guitar solos using the Minor Scale (part1)

In yet another lesson kindly supplied by Dan Denley from his flagship guitar lessons course -Amazing Guitar Secrets - Dan shows you how to use the notes from the Minor Scale, initially focussing on the 'natural minor' scale, and expanding on this to the 'harmonic minor scale'. Dan explains the constructs of the minor scale, and shows you some examples of playing both natural and harmonic minor scales. Of course this is just a short extract, you will learn much more about minor scales in the course itself.

This is another mini-lesson taken from the Amazing Guitar Secrets multimedia course which uses video, audio and animation, with everything backed up in print on the course handbook, to improve your understanding of the concepts of what you are playing. You learn the actual technique from an expert teacher - one who is always on hand, is focussed on your progression, never gets annoyed at having to repeat things over and over, plus you don't have to travel to lessons, and you learn based on your own schedule and time availability!

Techniques for improving your guitar sound - Palm Muting

Some guitar techniques actually don't require any reals musical knowledge or training whatsover!

In this video lesson, taken from Dan Denleys original and probably most popular guitar lessons course -Amazing Guitar Secrets - Dan shows you how to use the technique of 'Muting' ( i.e. shutting down the sound ) what you are playing by the application of your palm to the fretboard.

This creates great 'stop' phrases within your solo, which serve to accentuate what you are playing, and the progression from one solo phrase to the next.

This is just a short extract from the Amazing Guitar Secrets course which uses multimedia ( sound, visuals, video clips etc ) plus tab and tuition workbooks to give you everthing you need to achieve your guitar playing targets in an easy-to-learn environment - the comfort of your own home, with the ability to watch each lesson as many times as you need to, pause and replay any parts you didn't quite catch, and of course choose your own time schedule for learning.

Ragtime Guitar Lessons: Blind Blake Style #2 by Jim Bruce

Just before Christmas I posted the first of Jim Bruce's Blind Blake style Ragtime Blues lessons.

Judging by the feedback, there is a lot more interest for this genre of music than I'd expected, so I've asked Jim if he can help out my subscribers, and he has again kindly supplied another video Ragtime Blues lesson.

Jim Bruce has an entire course on learning the Blind Blake style of Ragtime Blues Guitar, Jim both plays and teaches this really catchy style with extreme professionalism and enthusiasm.

This video clip is a longer "taster" mini-lesson ( just under 9 mins )featuring Blake's "Southern Rag" in C, "Come on Boys" in G, and "Down the Country", best played in open D tuning. Following from the previous lesson, you'll get a greater understanding of the techniques in producing this really uplifting ragtime sound - many of these can be redeployed in other Blues/Blues-rock genres, so whatever your brand of music, this is 9 minutes well spent! I also wanted to let you know of a great event happening on Sunday 20th, on www.imagefm.ca, at 4pm Eastern Time, 9pm GMT. ( Check time for for your zone ).

Having joined MySpace and Facebook several years ago, I have hundreds of band on my friend lists. Of all of these, one Canadian band, "Dame", a progressive-power-pop female trio from Toronto really stood out and sparked my interest almost 2 years ago.

Back in August they won Canada's YouDiscover.ca Band of the Year, beating hundreds of really good bands along the way. Among their prizes were a recording contract, and a fabulous gig supporting Styx for a televised New Years Eve special from Niagara Falls.

In the course of the recording arrangements, there was a name change to "Moeraes Fate" ( Greek legend reference ).

So this Sunday you can watch the band play and celebrate the festive season at their Christmas Special on ImageFm.ca. I'm reliably informed they will be sticking to a Christmas theme, so there should be some fun and frolics.

I wouldn't normally stick my neck out, but I think these girls can be part of the future of Rock Music, which is in sad decline right now. You can check out samples of the songs from their new recording on their MySpace page at http://www.myspace.com/moeraesfateband

Now I know not everyone will aspire to being a 'full-time' Ragtime Blues player, but it is a style that almost everyone really likes, and a neat addition to any guitar player's repertoire, whether you mainly play, rock, blues, acoustic - whatever.

Secrets to composing Songs ( part 3) - Dan Denley

This is the final part of a 3-part trilogy of videos from Dan's Amazing Guitar Secrets course, designed to open up some 'insider secrets' on some simple but effective ways of composing songs.

Blues Guitar Chord progressions - D minor

Dan Denley has again kindly provided another video guitar lesson for my Blog readers. Dan has a whole bunch of fantastic guitar learning programs, including AmazingGuitarSecrets, BluesGuitar Secrets, AcousticGuitarSecrets and LeadGuitarSecrets and is always working to improve and upgrade them, as well as periodically developing new lessons covering yet another area of guitar music.

This lesson is taken from DVD 5 (Blues Guitar Progressions) of his Ultimate Guide to Chords course, a fully comprehensive learning program which gets you to understand the REASONS for playing particular chord patterns, or why a particular scale is suited for playing lead over a chord sequence. For me, this course bridges the gap between theory and practice which has always been my difficulty. The split videos ( showing both fretting and chording hands close-up ), along with the audio samples and tabs for each lesson, and the textual instruction from the manuals really bring it all together in a manner which is relevant to how you play guitar in the REAL world.

This mini-lesson is a short extract from Ultimate Guide to Chords showing how you can transform certain chord patterns just by changing tempo, and slightly adjusting the format of the dominant key - in this example he slows down a Dm7 chord set, switching the Dm7 for a Dm9, producing a really nice minor blues sequence.

Once again the video is split to show both the picking and the chording hands simultaneously in close-up.

Dan has a whole bunch of fantastic guitar learning programs, including AmazingGuitarSecrets, BluesGuitar Secrets, AcousticGuitarSecrets and LeadGuitarSecrets and is always working to improve and upgrade them, as well as periodically developing new lessons covering yet another area of guitar music.

He has recently released his latest learning resource - Ultimate Guide to Chords, which, for me, is the definitive learning program for understanding chord theory, how chords relate to scales AND how to put this into practice to improve your playing. I am honoured that he has once again selected this Guitar Tips blog to preview his Ultimate Guide to Chords .

The preview is a short lesson (just over 7 minutes) on video explaining, using the Roman Numeral System, how to harmonize guitar chords with any scale being played, and how to figure which scales should be played for any guitar chord progression.

When you see guitar players who can seemingly effortlessly sit in on a session, and play hot licks along with the chords being played, there is usually nothing instinctive about this, but a whole background of chord and scales theory learning, leading up to this ability.

This lesson ( 7m 13s) takes the C major and minor scales, shows the differentiation between the scale notes played for each, and shows how these notes can be played right across the fretboard. It then shows how to transpose what you've learned to the other keys.

Once again the video is split to show both the picking and the chording hands simultaneously in close-up.

messages for several songs indicating that "The person hosting
these songs has asked them to be removed from the Chordie index"

Apologies, but I am that person! I'm sorry if you've been frustrated

have graciously removed them at my request. I would have preferred if
they had instead replaced their pages with links to my original
transcriptions, but this was unfortunately not possible.

Project X - The C-A-G-E-D System

This tip comes from my old friend Andrew Koblick, of Guitar5Day. Andy has a great new lessons resource, which he mysteriously calls "Project X", and this video lesson is an extract from the course. It explains the C-A-G-E-D system, and shows you how to use this to master the fretboard. Somewhat radically, Andy shows that, while the general thinking is that you need to use five forms for playing scales and lead runs, this can actually be reduced down to just TWO! Obviously, this makes the art of gaining control of your guitar's entire fretboard so much easier.

Once again, a tip from Chris Elmore, owner/creater of ElmoreMusic

This is a brilliant article/lesson, with tab, sound and video, where Chris shows you how to play some really fancy and nifty riffs on lead guitar. Just watching Chris's hand movements as he switches between standard and "backward" fretting with his left hand makes you want to stop what you're doing and try that out right away!!

I'm not a lead guitarist myself, but I find with the help of the lessons ( like this one ) generously made available to my Blog readers by Chris and others, I'm starting to surprise my friends at our jam sessions. The look of astonishment on their faces when I add in a nifty lead break on one of the other players' numbers is priceless!

Chris has provided a great article-cum-lesson, which gives a short introduction to The Blues and it's influences on today's guitarists, and a lesson, with tabs and audio which will give you an insight into how standard blues playing patterns have found themselves into many of the modern music genres. How to play "Blue Star" ( Shadows )

This latest tip also comes from Chris Elmore, CEO of Elmore Music ( creators of GuitarTips, and Guitar Songs, among other great guitar learning sites and resources.)

Chris shows you - with guitar tab, audio and video, how to play a really neat but tricky guitar song - "Blue Star" by the Shadows.

While you may not be a huge Shadows fan, the approach to learning demonstrated here will be helpful to you, as Chris breaks the song down into bite-size components, for easier learning. There is the expected melodic guitar line that typifies the Shadows' work, but also the chord patterns which fit in to the mix for you to learn. The techniques learned here can be applied to other songs you might be more familiar with, but this is quite a challenging lesson, these guitar tunes were always 'show-off' numbers.

Who knows, maybe you will be adding it as one of your 'party pieces'!

Finding chords and lyrics on the net

I received several requests each day to locate chords and lyrics for specific songs, which I may not already have on my website. Generally, I am always pleased to help out, but as the volumes increase, it does take up quite a bit of time, and I only do what the requester could easily do for themselves.

For instance, I received this e-mail request for help recently:

"I request the lyric and Guitar Cord for the song Only Love by Tredemark, Without You by Mariah Carey, Goodbye by Air Supply.I also request the Indonesian song Teman Tapi Mesra by Ratu. It is the latest one. Also Jujur by Radja. TQ."

My response is the advice I would give to anyone searching the web for playable versions of songs they like:

"You should be able to locate these songs quite easily yourself, by searching on Google. If you use the following search terms ( including the quotes )

"guitar chords" "trademark" "only love"

"guitar chords" "mariah carey" "without you"

"guitar chords" "air supply" "goodbye"

you should find at least one version of each song - the advantage is that you will probably find a few versions, and some might suit better than others, perhaps have easier chords, or be in a key that suits your voice.

If you don't have any success, try the same search without the song title - "guitar chords" "air supply" - in some cases google will have indexed a site for the artists they include, but not for all of the song titles, so you may still find a site with the song you're seeking.

The Malay Olga is probably the best place to locate Indonesian bands and artists' music : http://malayolga.name.my/malayolga/. You might also have some success at http://indonesian.lyrics-collection.com"

I hope this helps all of you who would like to play songs by your favourite artists, but haven't been able to locate any help on the net.

Request for help with strumming

I received an e-mail request for help today:

Hi PJ

On your website It doesn’t show how the chord should be played. Can you please tell me how I find out The Way in which the chord should be played example If I played the G chord should I play it Down Up Up Down or Up Down Down Up?

My response is below:

Hi,

I'm afraid there's no single way that any chord should be strummed - it depends on the song and on the player's interpretation of the song. This is the main reason I don't put strumming patterns on the songs on the site.

The best advice I always give to anyone learning a new song is to learn the song in three stages. Firstly learn to play the song with just down strums, so that you get familiar with the song structure, chord changes, etc. Then, while listening to the original song, mute the guitar strings with your left hand, and practice strumming along to the song with your right. This will allow you to concentrate on the strumming patterns, without having to think about chord changes, picking out nifty runs etc.

When you've mastered these, the third stage is joining the two parts together, you should find the strumming just comes naturally now.

Transposing Guitar Songs

Transposing is where you take the chords for a song, and change them all to a higher or lower key, keeping the relationship between the chords intact.

The main reasons for wanting to do this are:

- The key doesn't suit your singing voice

- The song is in a key which produces difficult-to-play chords ( e.g. a flat or sharp key ).

I've written an article which gives you a simplified way of transposing song chords, and understanding the concept behind it, you can view it at:

After you've done this a few times, it will become instinctive, so that you can read a song in the key of Eb, and transpose it to D or E without having to stop and think about it.

What Are The Different Types Of Guitar Strings Available Today?

Strings:
Your guitar may come with steel strings or nylon strings, depending on what style of guitar you have bought. The following information will outline the key differences between Nylon and Steel strings. All strings vary in sound. Therefore, it is best to try out different strings before you settle down with one particular brand.

Nylon strings are generally used in classical music although some jazz players use nylon strings for their finger style techniques. Some folk guitarists use nylon strings as well. Nylon strings are great for beginners because they are easier on the fingers than steel strings. They are also cheaper than steel strings.

Steel Strings are generally used in Rock, Country and Folk music because of their twangy resonance and versatility. Steel strings come in different gauge sizes. "Gauge" is the term to describe the thickness of the string. Therefore you can have 'light gauge' strings or heavy gauge strings. Lights are recommended for beginners, as they are thin and soft.

Also available today are strings that combine both silk and steel together. The sound of these strings is very bright and clear. They are also extremely easy on your fingers. So when you are choosing your strings, keep in mind that the differences in brands are very slight. In fact, more expensive strings are not necessarily the best.

Also a good point to keep in mind is that every time your fingers touch the strings, they pick up dirt and rust. This causes your strings to loose their sound and life. So after playing your guitar, give your strings a wipe with a DRY rag but not damp one.

Your fingers will also get a little sore when first starting out. Don't worry, as this will all go away. Try to soak your fingers in a bit of vinegar before you play, or even rub them in aloe vera afterwards. This will reduce the soreness.

The aim here is to develop a hard layer of skin on the tips of your fingers so that it doesn't hurt to play after that. A friend once told me that learning to play the guitar is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration. Thus, if you want to become an unreal guitarist, PRACTICE, PRACTICE, and PRACTICE. That's the biggest secret!
